Don't misspell the name of the language you speak.
My younger brother is going to start high school next year and since my family has lost all hope in the public school system, we are currently shopping around for a private high school. When I say “we are currently shopping around,” I really mean “my mom asked me to do a Google search for schools in our area.”
During my research, I was on the website of a particular...

I think I’ve seen more spelling errors on signs and posters at my university than I did at the community college I went to. That’s discouraging, haha.
Semi-related question: When you see a grammatical error on Facebook, Tumblr, or out in real life, do you correct the culprit or just leave it alone?

More on "laser".
I have been informed by several readers (bedbugsbiting, helloprettypretty, onlysaysficus, rhondawr) that laser is an acronym - Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Thanks for the info, guys. For whatever reason, this acronym is now used like a regular word. It’s not capitalized and it has no periods. I’m having difficulty thinking of other acronyms like this, but...
endoftheword asked: Correct me if I'm wrong here, but lazer, spelt with a Z, is the American English way to spell it. While laser, with an S, is the British English form.

This is beautiful :’)
punchingclothes asked: I have a question!
Say for example I've written a sentence: I went to the store today (which actually happened to be open for business!)
Would I still have put a full stop at the end of that sentence outside the brackets even though I've ended it with an exclamation mark on the inside?

New semester, new papers.
I cannot stress this enough - read your papers aloud before you turn them in. It will really help with catching errors and awkward sentences.
Trust me, you will find more errors if you read it out loud than if you read it in your head.
raquelove asked: i just read your "about me" post. It seems that we are around the same age :) Anyway, I was wondering where do you go to school?

Can I Begin a Sentence with a Conjunction?
theyuniversity:
However, if your teacher/professor appreciates an individual’s right to style, feel free to start sentences with conjunctions. (Just don’t overdo it). After all, Melville, Stevenson, and Hawthorne all did it.

Well,
I live in Southern California. It’s Monday, May 16, 3:34 AM.
I’m probably gonna post this later this morning so people can get a chance to read it.
Before I started typing this, I was working on a claim of policy paper for my English class. It’s about hate groups and their relationship with the First Amendment.
I’m a big fan of the First Amendment.

Go ahead and email it to me at grammarizkewl@gmail.com
Finals are upon us and that means term papers are due. I’d love to give your paper my blessing before you turn it in.
Be sure to send it at least three days before the due date so I have enough time to get it back to you.

Commas
I’ve had a few people ask me for help with commas, so I’ll try to help as much as I can. In elementary school, I was taught that you put a comma any time there is supposed to be a pause in a sentence. Well, that is sort of true.
Commas are used to separate independent clauses when they are joined by a coordinating conjunction (F.A.N.B.O.Y.S. - For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So).

Anon Asked...
An Oxford comma is the comma used directly before a coordinating conjunction (usually and, or, or nor). In a sentence, it would look like My mom sent me to the store to buy milk, eggs, and tomatoes. Some people love the Oxford comma, but some people hate it. I don’t think there is anyone who is in between. I think they’re stupid, but you know, that’s just me. All of my college...

Before you read this, say "February" out loud.
A friend of mine always gives me a hard time because I pronounce both Rs - feb-rooh-ary.
But she swears it’s supposed to be feb-yoo-ary.
Grammar is my thing, so I don’t really care about pronunciation (most of the time), but I was just wondering how other people pronounce it. Just gonna put a question mark at the end of this sentence so you guys can answer it?
Anonymous asked: How do I fix my spelling? I can spell astute and absolute, obnoxious and acoustics, all without any problem,(nor have I ever had problems with "there" or "Effect/Affect") but I can't write origional without it looking like that. Akward just looks weird with that extra "w" in it, and asume... Should it really have two "s"es?

My dog's, Fido, collar is missing.

My dog, Fido's, collar is missing.
I would probably reword to avoid the whole problem, but I see this possessive issue often enough in others' writings to want to know what the actual answer is. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I really don't understand how people confuse "are"...
They’re not even pronounced exactly the same. And they only have one letter in common. Like, really, come on.
I think I’m more okay with people confusing there/they’re/their than I am with people confusing are/our.
