While there are many words that have alternate spellings, laser is not one of them. Laser is one of the most commonly misspelled words, though, so I guess I have to cut the person who made that sign some slack.

I remember some English professor mentioning that the other way around: in British English “laser” is spelt with a Z and, in American English, with an S.
