More on “laser”.

I have been informed by several readers (bedbugsbiting, helloprettypretty, onlysaysficus, rhondawr) that laser is an acronym - Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Thanks for the info, guys. For whatever reason, this acronym is now used like a regular word. It’s not capitalized and it has no periods. I’m having difficulty thinking of other acronyms like this, but I’m sure there are more.

The fact that not many people know about laser being an acronym makes spelling mistakes for that word more common. No one misspells USA or NATO or PETA simply because they know what each letter stands for (and I guess because the spelling is kind of obvious…but still). Anyway, I thought that was interesting.
